Lester Timothy
Managing Director (Head of Corporate Commercial)
Lester completed his LLB degree at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (previously University of Port Elizabeth) in 2003. He also completed his LLM degree at the same university in 2005.
Lester is the Managing Director of Timothy and Timothy Attorneys and is also co-owner, alongside Carlo Timothy. Lester heads up the firm’s Corporate Commercial Department and practices in the area of Commercial Litigation.
Since the inception of his legal career, Lester worked at top tier, local and global, law firms such as Smith Tabata Buchanan Boyes and Norton Rose Fulbright (previously Deneys Reitz Attorneys).
During his 8 years at Norton Rose Fulbright, Lester independently ran a commercial litigation practice and was also fortunate to have subsequently joined the firm’s Corporate Commercial Department, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions; commercial property transactions; consumer law; company law; energy; oil and gas; retail; construction and mining, amongst others. Lester was also part of the team that ran the corporate restructuring of the numerous Solar PV and Wind renewable energy projects under the Department of Energy’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.
After his stint at Norton Rose Fulbright, he joined the dynamic legal team of the internationally renowned retail giant, Woolworths. At Woolworths, Lester was involved in the acquisition of David Jones (Australia). He was also in charge of the related legal and tax corporate-restructuring of Woolworths (globally) and ran the legal work relating to the company’s Clothing; Beauty; Tax; and liquor licensing departments. Lester was also responsible for transfer pricing compliance in respect of cross-border sales for Woolworths globally.

Carlo Timothy
Director (Head of Employment and Litigation)
Carlo completed his LLB degree at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2009.
Carlo is a Director of Timothy and Timothy Attorneys and is also co-owner, alongside Lester Timothy. He heads up our Employment and Litigation Departments.
He is a certified CCMA Commissioner, who is appointed to the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC).
Carlo’s clients include medium to large corporates, local and national government departments, parastatals and the like, whom he represents in internal disciplinary hearings, at the CCMA or appropriate bargaining councils, the Labour Court and the Labour Appeal Court.
Carlo has gained his experience in Employment Law in both the private and public sectors having previously been employed by top tier law firm Smith Tabata Buchanan Boyes; the Provincial Government of the Western Cape under the auspices of the Department of the Premier and also by a large multinational retail company, Massmart (Massdiscounters).
Carlo’s Employment law experience includes running litigation for employers and employees in the CCMA as well as the General Public Service Sector Bargaining Council, Motor Industry Bargaining Council, South African Local Government Bargaining Council and the National Bargaining Council for Road and Freight.
Carlo also has a niche practice in Family Law and specialized Litigation under Timothy and Timothy Attorneys.

Shaheem Jakoet
Special Counsel (Compliance and Commercial)
Shaheem completed his BA degree at the University of Cape Town in 1996 and his LLB at the same university in 1999.
Shaheem fulfils a specialized corporate commercial and compliance function at Timothy and Timothy Attorneys.
He previously worked at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr (CDH). He spent 4 years at CDH focusing on top-end corporate commercial transactions including franchising; commercial property; corporate restructuring; BBBEE transactions; financial services and structured finance transactions; mergers and acquisitions; intellectual property and JSE listings, amongst others.
Thereafter he spent 8 years at Metropolitan Life (now MMI Holdings), holding the positions of Senior Group Legal Advisor (specializing in mergers and acquisitions and related corporate commercial, structured finance and insolvency related transactions) and Head of Group Compliance (being accountable to the Board Risk and Compliance Committee regarding compliance risk, both at a business unit level and enterprise level).
Shaheem also spent 3 years at retail giant, Woolworths, where he was responsible for real estate leasing and was the lead legal advisor to the IT function, amongst others. He was also intricately involved in the company’s corporate commercial and competition law function.
His years of experience in the areas of Commercial Law; Structured Finance and Compliance is invaluable to our clients both from a legal and commercial perspective.

Wafiq Davids
Special Counsel (Head of Conveyancing and Property)
Wafiq completed his Bachelor of Social Science (majors Organisational Psychology and Anthropology) at the University of Cape Town in 2006. He also completed his LLB degree through UNISA in 2010 and was admitted as an Attorney and Conveyancer in 2011.
Wafiq heads up the Property and Conveyancing team at Timothy and Timothy Attorneys. He is also a member of the Black Conveyancers Association (BCA).
He is a dynamic Attorney and Conveyancer with a legal service philosophy centered around the client.
After completing his studies at the University of Cape Town he commenced work at the shipping corporate, Maersk Line (as a Business Analyst).
After 2 years with Maersk Line, he relocated to London and as appointed as a Business Analyst at the pharmaceutical corporate, GlaxoSmithKline. Upon his return to Cape Town, Wafiq earned his stripes at top tier conveyancing and property law firm, Smith Tabata Buchanan Boyes, practicing as an Attorney and Conveyancer gaining valuable experience in the areas of property/Conveyancing, litigation, and commercial law. Wafiq also practices under the banner of The Woodstock Lawyers: Davids and Partners.
He is proficient in structuring property transactions, strategies and implementation of commercial and mixed-use developments. His experience extends to private and security bonds.
Wafiq also advises on tax relating to property issues and commercial property transactions, including property due diligences.

Mtura Nyiki
Special Counsel (Public Liability & Insurance)
Mtura completed his Baccalaureus Procurationis (BProc) law degree at the University of Fort Hare in 1993 and was admitted as an Attorney of the High Court in 1997.
Mtura joined Timothy and Timothy attorneys in January 2018, specializing in Insurance; Public Liability and Professional Negligence claims.
He started is legal practice career in King Williams Town, Eastern Cape, during which time he practiced for his own account for 3 years.
After relocating to Cape Town, Mtura practiced at Dicks Van Der Merwe Attorneys for 12 years, where he started his deep specialization in Insurance; Public Liability and Professional Negligence claims.
Over the years he serviced clients such as Regent Insurance; Stalker Hutchinson Admiral; AIG Insurance; Motor Claims Bureau; and Paladin Insurance Group, to name a few.
Mtura has earned great respect in the Insurance Law industry and offers invaluable skills-transfer opportunities to our lawyers. His wealth of experience offers a dynamic value-add for our insurance clients.

Janis Lamb
Office Manager
Janis joined Timothy and Timothy Attorneys in November 2017.
She holds the position as Office Manager of the firm, running its day-to-day administration. She also assisted the founders with the relaunch of the firm in 2017.
She is an invaluable resource to our team and our clients. Janis is at the forefront of legal support and innovation and is responsible for the Company Secretarial administrative function of the firm and our clients.
Her function includes, amongst other things, company registration and deregistration; change of directors and company information; and general CIPC liaison functions.
Janis has also moved into the area of paralegal support for the firm and is quickly proving that there are indeed no boundaries or limitations in legal practice!
